A storage dresser is a must-have piece of storage furniture in any bedroom, a convenient place to store all kinds of clothing – everything from sweaters and socks to T-shirts and blue jeans. A dresser is an important piece of furniture even in bedrooms that have closets, as dressers can offer convenient storage for seasonal and frequently worn items, leaving more room in the closet for bulky outerwear and delicate items that need to be hung. Types of Dressers & Bedroom Storage Furniture
Dressers
The most common type of bedroom storage furniture, dressers are columnar storage units typically containing four to eight spacious drawers for clothes and accessories. Tall dressers may have three to six drawers stacked vertically atop each other, while wide dressers may have two or more columns of two or more drawers each. The drawers in a dresser’s top row may be smaller than the others, designed specifically for socks, undergarments, and accessories. Wood dressers are by far the most popular, but metal and even stone-topped dressers are options as well.
Chests of Drawers
Chests of drawers can be described as tall, narrow dressers, designed to provide ample storage space without taking up as much floor space as dressers do. While dressers are usually low, their surfaces accessible while sitting, chests of drawers are taller, their surfaces typically only accessible while standing. Chests of drawers are ideal in smaller bedrooms where floor space is limited and valuable.
Trunks, Storage Chests & Benches
Low to the ground and typically found at the foot of the bed, trunks, storage chests, and storage benches are convenient bedroom storage options for storing pillows, blankets, and additional bed linens nearby the bed. These box-like rectangular storage units feature removable tops that lift up or off to reveal spacious storage compartments within. With surfaces at just about seat height, storage benches may also act as convenient places to sit to put on or remove shoes.
Armoires & Wardrobes
Armoires and wardrobes are some of the largest pieces of bedroom furniture, and are almost like freestanding closets. Both armoires and wardrobes have tall cabinet doors that conceal closet-like compartments with shelves and/or clothing rods ideal for hanging clothes and other accessories. In their bases, these storage furniture pieces may also have additional drawers. Armoires and wardrobes take up a lot of floor space and are best as stand-in closets for large bedrooms without them.
How to Choose a Dresser
The first step to choosing the best dresser for your space is assessing your storage needs. How much clothing do you have? Do you have a closet? Do you have space under your bed to store things? If you don’t have a closet, an armoire or wardrobe might be the best choice, as one of these large dressers can offer you the most storage space for your clothing and accessories out of any of these options. If you do have a closet but it’s small, or if you rotate your wardrobe depending on the season, a large dresser can be a great option for storing your most-worn items where you can reach them easily, leaving space in your closet for out-of-season garments and other items you’d rather keep stored away. If floor space is an issue, consider a chest of drawers rather than a dresser, and pair it with a storage bench placed at the foot of your bed. Storage benches are great storage solutions for extra bedding, but can also conveniently store other things, like shoes, books, toys, and more.
